STEM

The PTA is committed to igniting a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) among our students. Through a range of resources and programs, we strive to inspire and cultivate student participation in STEM activities.  From organizing hands-on workshops and competitions to supporting school initiatives, our PTA is dedicated to preparing students for the future.

STEM Workshops

KAST (Kids are Scientists Too) is a national non-profit STEM education program aimed at exposing young students in local elementary schools to STEM topics with the hope of instilling a life-long joy of science.  The program is run by volunteer students from Centreville High School and goes above and beyond what is required by the state to give students access to a more intensive scientific education.  And even better - this after-school workshop is FREE.

An after-school workshop is about an hour long.  Each session begins with an engaging lecture followed by an activity such as an experiment.  The lesson concludes with a short review to ensure each student fully understood the material.  These science workshops are intended to align with the 3rd to 6th grade curriculum and are intended to provide the students with more hands-on activities.

After-School Programs

Each session of after-school programs will include a variety of STEM-related classes for which students can register.  This year's fall session includes the following:

STEAM Arts & Crafts.  In this STEAM-based arts & crafts program, we blend education and fun like a perfect recipe.  We focus on creating innovative crafts that can work and move, like rockets that can shoot, instruments that make music, and cars that can move.  Activities are based on STEAM principles and teach kids important problem-solving and developmental skills.  This class is offered on Mondays and open to students in Kindergarten - 2nd grade.

LEGO Engineering.  At Play-Well TEKnologies, we know that kids are already naturally gifted creators.  What we strive to provide is an environment where students can create without fear of mistakes, explore fundamental STEM concepts through play, and express their creativity in ways they never thought possible.  With tens of thousands of LEGO pieces and the guidance of our passionate instructors, the possibilities are truly endless. This class is offered on Tuesdays and open to students in Kindergarten - 6th grade.

Tech Club.  iCode provides a comprehensive STEAM program.  Each class involves an exciting, hands-on activity, designed to teach a new skill.  Knowledgeable instructors help students to become comfortable with technology in a fun approach that enhances learning in math, science, engineering, and the arts.  This class is offered on Wednesdays and open to students in 3rd - 6th grade.

Chess.  Learn chess with Magnus Chess Academy, the five time world champion's academy!  Class time is divided between lessons and practice games.  Lessons range from the basic rules to advanced tournament strategies.  Students will have opportunities to play in tournaments outside of club time, which may have an additional fee.  All chess supplies are provided, and all grades and skills levels are welcome.  This class is offered on Thursdays and open to students in Kindergarten - 6th grade.
